Central Houston served as the principal proponent and organizer of a special assessment district to provide supplemental services and improvements within 1,173 acres of downtown. Today, Houston Downtown Management District, a body politic and corporate, is providing downtown property owners and tenants supplemental services, redevelopment assistance and capital improvements. This plan of services and improvements is provided oversight by a 30-member board of directors, representing downtown property owners, managers, residents and tenants. Central Houston is contracted to provide administrative and managerial personnel. The District is making a significant impact in public safety, maintenance operations, long range planning, economic development, and improving the public's perception of downtown.
